More Than Just Hockey — A Community on Ice

The OWBH isn’t just about playing hockey. It’s a community-driven program for adult women hockey players in Ottawa, built to help beginners and returning players learn, grow, and connect with others who share their passion for the game. Whether you’re new to hockey or taking your first steps back onto the rink, you’ll find a welcoming and inclusive space where progress is celebrated and fun comes first.

Coed Practices for Skill Development

Coed adult beginner hockey practices are at the heart of the OWBH experience. These sessions bring together players of all levels — from true beginners to low-intermediate skaters — combining structured drills with guided play.

During these sessions, players focus on key fundamentals:

🏒 On-Ice Skill Development

  • Skating: Balance, edge control, transitions, crossovers, and backward skating

  • Shooting: Wrist shots, backhands, and improving shot accuracy

  • Puck Handling: Stickhandling, passing, and controlling the puck under pressure

  • Game Awareness: Positioning, movement, and reading plays

  • Goalie Training: Angles, rebound control, glove saves, and situational drills

Each session concludes with a short 3 vs 3 scrimmage, allowing players to apply what they’ve learned in a fun, fast-paced format.

Women’s Beginner Hockey Practices

The Ottawa West Beginner Hockey League also runs women-focused and absolute beginner sessions, specifically designed for women learning or returning to the game.

These practices offer:

  • A safe, supportive, and non-judgmental environment

  • Guided instruction from experienced coaches

  • A chance to learn without pressure or intimidation

  • An opportunity to build confidence on and off the ice

Women consistently report increased confidence, improved technique, and a deeper enjoyment of the sport through these sessions.

A Fun and Friendly Hockey Experience

The OWBH emphasizes fun, inclusivity, and social connection. Players enjoy both 3 vs 3 games and Saturday night full-ice matchups, with a strong focus on teamwork and community.

Benefits include:

  • Fast-paced, small-area games that increase puck touches and player involvement

  • Opportunities to make new friendships and team connections

  • Regular photo and video highlights shared through social media

  • A positive atmosphere that makes every night enjoyable

The combination of skill development and friendly competition creates a hockey environment unlike any other in Ottawa.
