Ottawa West Beginner Hockey League Partners with Kanata Food Cupboard to Support Local Families This Holiday Season

Ottawa, ON — The Ottawa West Beginner Hockey League (OWBHL) is proud to announce a new community partnership with the Kanata Food Cupboard to help raise funds and awareness for local families in need during the upcoming holiday season. From November through December 2025, players, coaches, and supporters of the league will rally together to make a difference — with one special hockey game dedicated entirely to supporting the cause.

Donations of $20 or more will receive an official tax receipt, and contributions can be made easily through our dedicated online platform that was created specifically for this campaign. The league hopes to not only raise much-needed funds but also inspire players and residents alike to get involved in helping ensure everyone in Kanata and Ottawa West has food on their tables this winter.

A Shared Commitment to Community

Founded in 1985, the Kanata Food Cupboard has been a pillar of compassion for nearly four decades. The organization provides healthy food choices and support to thousands of residents each year, relying heavily on volunteers, staff, and donors to continue its mission.

What began in the basement of St. Paul’s Anglican Church, through the efforts of community leaders like Jim Van Doorn, Heather Colls, Jane Grant, and Bernie Hartlin, has grown into one of Kanata’s most vital social support services.

“The first Christmas we had 25 families, and from there it just mushroomed,” recalls co-founder Heather Colls.

The Food Cupboard’s mission is simple yet powerful — to create a resilient Kanata community where individuals and families can thrive, regardless of race, ethnicity, ability, age, sexual orientation, or religion. The organization’s team, led by Chair Cody Guthrie alongside past chairs MP Jenna Sudds and Dylan Samuel, continues to embody this inclusive and caring spirit.

As demand for food support rises across Ottawa, partnerships like this one with the Ottawa West Beginner Hockey League are vital in helping the Food Cupboard continue its life-changing work.

Hockey with Heart: About the Ottawa West Beginner Hockey League

The Ottawa West Beginner Hockey League is widely recognized as one of the best adult co-ed recreational hockey programs in the region. Serving the west end of Ottawa, including Kanata, the program offers structured practices, formal training sessions, a 3 vs 3 league, and casual pick-up hockey opportunities for adults of all ages and experience levels.

What sets the OWBHL apart is its focus on accessibility and skill development. Whether participants are lacing up skates for the first time or returning to the ice after years away, the league provides a supportive environment where everyone can improve and have fun.

“It’s never too late to learn hockey,” said an OWBHL organizer. “We believe in creating a community where adults can build confidence, fitness, and friendships — all while learning the game.”

The league also places a strong emphasis on women’s beginner and women-focused hockey practices, providing a welcoming and inclusive space for players to develop at their own pace. These sessions are specifically designed for beginners to intermediate-level women, promoting skill-building without the pressure of competition.

Goalies are also encouraged to participate — whether trying on their gear for the first time or sharpening their skills in a friendly, low-pressure setting.

By combining skill development, teamwork, and community spirit, the Ottawa West Beginner Hockey League embodies the true spirit of hockey — and now, that same spirit will help bring hope to local families this holiday season.

How to Get Involved

The OWBHL’s fundraising campaign for the Kanata Food Cupboard will run throughout November and December 2025, with the dedicated charity game set to be one of the season’s highlights.

Players and supporters can help by:

  • Attending the charity hockey game and contributing in person.

  • Donating online through the official fundraising website.

  • Spreading the word across social media and within their workplaces or community groups.

Every dollar raised will help the Kanata Food Cupboard continue providing nutritious food to individuals and families in need — especially during the challenging winter months.

“Hockey builds community, and community means taking care of each other,” said an OWBHL representative. “We’re proud to use our league to make a difference where it matters most — right here at home.”
