Hockey is a beloved sport in Ottawa, with many players taking to the ice every season to enjoy the game. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned player, having the right equipment is crucial to your success and safety on the ice.
Here is a short review of the must-have hockey equipment for players.

Essential Hockey Equipment Checklist:
Ice hockey skates
Helmet with a cage or visor
Shoulder pads
Elbow pads
Hockey gloves
Shin guards
Mouthguard
Hockey stick (wood, which is heavy, composite, or carbon fiber)
Hockey Equipment You must have before playing
Hockey Skates:
Although obvious, it is important to get a good pair of skates. It is one of the most essential pieces of equipment for any hockey player. Make sure to invest in a pair that fits well and provides good support. Whether you prefer traditional lace-up skates or newer models with advanced technology, finding the right fit is key to your performance on the ice. My experience is that you need to ensure you do not invest in cheap skates if you want to be serious about playing hockey, even as a beginner; spend the money.
Beaur, CCM and True are three top manufactures of skates and very popular with Players, But it appears True is becoming popular among goalies.
Hockey Helmet:
Protecting your head is of utmost importance in hockey. A high-quality helmet that fits properly is non-negotiable. Look for helmets with the HECC certification to ensure they meet safety standards. Safety should always come first when it comes to protecting your head during games and practices.
Cages
Generally, there are two different types of cages for player helmets, which are;
Metal Cage: Provides full facial protection.
Visor Cover: Covers the upper part of the face, made of transparent plastic, offering better visibility. Some are also full-face or partial metal and plastic covers.
Beaur and CCM are the most common and you can find them in most hockey stores.
Hockey Sticks:
Your hockey stick is your most important tool on the ice. Choose a stick that is the right length and flex for your size and position. Whether you prefer a composite or wood stick, finding one that feels comfortable and enhances your performance is crucial. It's worth trying out different sticks to see which one suits your style of play best.
Wood sticks are affordable and offer a traditional feel, making them popular for street or beginner hockey. However, they are heavier, less durable, and offer limited shot power.
Composite sticks, on the other hand, are made from carbon fiber, fiberglass, or Kevlar, are lighter, more responsive, and provide better flex and power. These are widely used in ice hockey at all levels.
Opinion - Seriously, I have played with both, but composite sticks are significantly better for serious players and would be highly recommended for beginner players due to their superior performance, light weight, durability, even if they are more expensive.
Finding Gloves that fit:
Your hands need protection, too, so investing in a good pair of hockey gloves is essential. Look for gloves that are padded for protection and offer a good grip on the stick. Finding gloves that fit well and allow for flexibility and movement will enhance your performance during games.
CCM, Warrior and Beaur all have a great selection of gloves that will help you with your game.
Protective gear:
From shoulder pads to shin guards, protective gear is vital for keeping you safe on the ice. Make sure to invest in gear that fits properly and provides adequate protection for your body. Whether you're a forward, defenseman, or goalie, having the right protective gear can prevent injuries and give you peace of mind during games.

Final thoughts
It is not easy. I have made errors over the past year I have been playing, but I have learned that having the right hockey equipment is crucial for players to enjoy the game safely and effectively. Investing in quality skates, a helmet, a stick, gloves, and protective gear will not only enhance your performance but also keep you protected on the ice. Finding equipment that fits well and suits your style of play is key to becoming a successful hockey player.
